SOS Chapala
DOG Rescue

Anything is "Pawsable" Dogs
These unique dogs will make wonderful pets and companions despite what they have gone through (or, perhaps, because of it).
At SOS Chapala DOG Rescue, we shelter mistreated and abandoned dogs brought to us from the Municipality of Chapala, Department of Ecology. We have many wonderful dogs, but some retain permanent scars from their mistreatment and/or neglect. What amazes us is that, despite all they have suffered, these dogs remain resilient, loving and happy.
"With their imperfections, you may find unspeakable beauty."

Gretel
She has no tail and some hip deformity, she is still gorgeous, raring to play and run!
Gretel was rescued from the streets, and she is beautifully unique. She has the long, narrow face of a collie, and the soft, thick, wavy coat of a shepherd, black and tan in color. She is quiet, calm, undemanding, friendly, loving and submissive to both humans and other dogs. She loves to frolic in the play-yard with them or to go for a walk with us. She is loath to soil her kennel, though, so house training may be really easy for her. Gretel also has two unusual physical traits. First, she has no tail! Not even a stub. Second, she has an awkward gait in her hind legs due to either an injury as a puppy or perhaps a birth defect. Nonetheless, our vet has assured us that, while there is no surgical remedy, her condition is not degenerative, nor will it hinder any of her playful activities. Gretel is about a year and a half years old and weighs around 19 kilos. Indeed, have a look at the video below from a recent fun walk/run with her. Gretel is one healthy, happy dog, and she will make the family that adopts her happy, too. We love Gretel!

Popeye
As a result of fireworks, he lost an eye and possibly hearing in one ear. He, too, remains happy, energetic and curious.
"I am strong to the finich, 'cause I eats me spinach! I am Popeye, the resilient pup!" He's a two-year-old Shepherd, Terrier mix, approximately 23 kilos, and incredibly resilient. Indeed, although a firecracker destroyed his right eye and the hearing in his right ear, he remains exuberant, friendly, happy as ever. He can be feisty with other, large dogs, but loves the company of smaller, especially submissive dogs. He's an active and incredibly smart boy who likes nothing more than to explore outdoors in the park, woods and beach. Popeye will suit an active person who wants a curious and loyal companion.

Bongo
He suffered a leg injury that left him with a life-time limp, but he is always ready for a walk.
Bongo is a large, handsome 4-year-old weighing about 25 kilos. He is a Lab mix, mostly white with distinctive black patches on his ears. Given his pronounced limp on his front left leg, we know his past life has not been kind. Yet, Bongo remains happy, kind, and gentle, longing to walk and spend time with the volunteers at SOS. Despite his injury, he is very strong, able to jump 2 feet off the ground when excited.
Bongo gets along with other friendly dogs. He spends his shelter days housed with 2 others, one his size and the other smaller. He is quiet and calm, but also curious, with a medium level of energy. He will do well in a home where he can stay active and play, but he may not be up to an extended run or hike. But, who knows? With his resiliency and the right care, Bongo may one day undertake a long adventure. He deserves a home where he can love and be loved.

Matthew (Adopted)
He survived a gunshot in the mouth, but miraculously emerged after surgery as handsome and adorable as ever with almost no trace of injury.
Matthew is the “comeback kid”; he just hasn’t made it all the way back yet. Matthew is a handsome German Shepherd mix with black and brown coloring and some striking brown eyebrows. He weighs 14 kilos and is probably about a year old. Matthew is a timid boy-- and for good reason. We don’t know much about his past, but we do know that he was the victim of a gunshot. He is healing well both physically and emotionally.
Matthew left the shelter for a field trip today. He walks beautifully on a leash, watching for cues all the way. He was a little frightened of the car, but hopped in and curled up on the seat. At the home where he visited, he was submissive to a small dog. He shares a kennel with two dogs and has been comfortable with them, so it would just take a little time for him to warm up to another canine friend. He found comfort relaxing beside the chair while he was petted. He loved the affection and would have stayed there as long as someone would oblige him. After he felt more relaxed, he became playful. Underneath his timidity is some puppy playfulness for sure, it’s just waiting to come out.
Matthew experienced cruelty, but with just a little patience and much-deserved love, he will rightfully achieve his status as the “comeback kid”. He has paid his dues; it’s time for him to be the recipient of some TLC.
Below is a link to a photo of Matthew showing missing teeth and scar to his gum, which you wouldn't notice unless you check his teeth. Incredibly handsome, he now lives a normal life, just waiting for someone to love.

Dewey
An abandoned senior dog, he's hoping to enjoy the best years of his life with someone special.
Dewey is a medium sized (18 kg) older (9 years old) gentleman with a kind and calm disposition. He is smart, affectionate, and loves giving kisses. He had a rough life and, when he arrived at SOS with his siblings, he was sickly with awful, matted fur. Now, though, with the help of SOS volunteers who gave him regular meals, fresh water, daily walks and brushings, his coat has a beautiful luster.
Even so, Dewey barked a little more than the other dogs at the shelter, and paced back and forth in his kennel. So, he currently resides with a foster family where he is now calm and happy. Shelter life did not suit him very well.
Dewey' s brother and sister have been adopted, so Dewey is hoping to find his own forever home soon to spend his remaining years sharing his joy with his newfound family.
Below is a link to a video of Dewey doing his dance routine at meal times. He ramains exuberant as ever.

Chloe (Adopted)
She was neglected by hoarders (25 dogs!) and so remains shy; but she's slowly but surely coming out her shell, and is learning to love sitting on someone's lap.
Chloe and the rest of her family were rescued from unfortunate circumstances. She is a tiny blonde-haired girl, about 3 years old and weighs about 6 kg., who is learning what love is. She is very shy, but she has slowly become more comfortable in the company of people. We don’t know what she experienced in her past, but she needs a special adopter who will be patient with her and help her to reach her greatest potential. She didn’t get a great start at life, but it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish, right? She deserves the chance to finish at the top of the world.

Bravo
He was likely used as a bait dog, but still handsome, gentle, and happy as can be.
When Bravo came to us, he had open sores and many scars revealing a hard life. He may have been used as bait in staged dog fights. (Yes, we humans can be cruel.) However, such unfortunates are usually chosen for their non-aggressive disposition, and this is certainly the case with Bravo who defies his name with playfulness towards other dogs and affection for people. (His best friends at the shelter are a pair of black Labrador Retrievers.) He is just over two years old, large (23 kg), muscular, with a reddish-brown coat--perhaps a mix of Labrador Retriever, Pit Bull Terrier and, given the adorable, expressive wrinkles on his forehead, some Shar-Pei thrown in for good measure. Apparently house-trained (so we get him out for a walk first thing every morning), he is now fully recovered, the epitome of health and happiness. Bravo is gentle, energetic, loves attention...and deserves a loving home. We volunteers who know him assure you: Bravo will return that love ten-fold.
